I have lime green grass? Is this crab grass in my lawn? Is crabgrass perennial or annual?

Do I have crab grass?

Crabgrass is an annual grass that germinates in the summer when the temperature of the soil reaches 55 Degrees Fahrenheit consistently and is generally finished by the first good frost. Crabgrass is light green in color, coarse bladed, and will root at the nodes when they touch the ground. Crabgrass leaves are rolled in the bud. They first appear wide, short, and blunt-tipped.  A single crabgrass plant can produce up to 700 tillers. It is a grass that appears in a bunch. It can also produce 150,000 seeds. It needs warm soil and sunlight to germinate. Crabgrass can be found in all 50 States.

Do not
verticut, seed, or core aerate when the soil and weather conditions are prime for the germination of crabgrass. By doing a slightly raised mowing height may help prevent the establishment by providing shade from sunlight. When crabgrass is going to seed, lower the mower height and collect the clippings to prevent seeds from establishing in the lawn. Crabgrass can be one of the least desired things to grow in your lawn. Pre-emergent from Weed Man can drastically reduce the amount of crab grass in the turf. In addition Weed Man has access to a post emergent that can touch up the lawn if crabgrass establishes itself. What Do Voles Look Like? What is a Vole? Trails Through Lawn? Winter Animal Damage?

Voles:

Voles, often confused with mice, they are small rodents that feast on turf root systems during winter months under the snow. Vole damage is often identified in spring as the snow melts. Tunnels or trails are tell tail signs of Vole activity. Voles overwinter in mulch, bushes, wood piles, and other areas.

If the damaged areas do not recover, seeding may be required to help recovery. Voles also girdle stems from small trees like, fruit, crab apple, or small saplings. Reducing overwinter areas, use of live traps, Plantskydd® repellent, or contacting your local pest control can help deter Voles.

If you have Vole damage you may want to rake trails, possibly add soil and seed in early spring to recover as quickly as possible. Do not use a pre-emergent until the seed is successfully germinated.

Call Weed Man of the Twin Cities with any additional questions in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metro areas.

Fertilize to help minimize winter kill on your lawn! Winter can be a damaging time for your lawn. Winter and Lawn

Winter Damage:

Wind, ice, and scalping from plowing can cause the most serious damage to the turf. Also extreme temperatures, and freeze/thaw conditions damage the turf by injuring the sensitive crown of the plant. If winter-kill occurs from these conditions, recovery may take longer than expected.
Winters can be unpredictable and may put your lawn through any of the winter-kill conditions. The best thing to do is to make sure the grass has been fertilized properly, monitoring the weather, and deal with these conditions as they occur.

Snow Plow Damage To Lawn and Curbs! Place Tall Flags in Turf Edges in Fall to Help Plow Drivers See the Curb!

Snow Plow Damage
The plows are out clearing roads, driveways, and sidewalks! Oftentimes plows damage turf near the curb. This damage is one of the biggest problems affecting the edge of your lawn in winter next to road salt.
It is important to repair damaged areas as soon as possible. Left unattended, broadleaf weeds and other invasive grasses will move in making recovery for turf more difficult. To help in recovery:

*Flush the soil with water
*Apply topsoil to the area
*Seed with hardy turf seed
*Water frequently

Place tall flexible steaks around border areas in the fall. This will help plowing crews identify the curb and prevent damaging your lawn in the future. If you have any question call your local Weed Man of the Twin Cities 651-456-9696 or visit us at http://minneapolis.weedmanusa.com

Weird Weed Near the Pond! Weed that is hard and looks like a snake? What is Horsetail Also known as: Candock, Snake Grass, and Scouring-Rush?

Horsetail
 (Equisetum)

Also known as: Candock, Snake Grass, and Scouring-Rush.
Horsetail is tall, thin, and branch-like. With dark segments throughout the stem.
Horsetail spreads by spores rather than seeds.
Horsetail is a perennial that can be found in areas with poor drainage and wetlands such as low-lying areas, around ponds, and marshes.

Cultural Practices
Increasing drainage in the soils will help to reduce Horsetail’s appearance.
Utilizing a fertilization and weed control program will help the turf to outcompete Horsetail, but it is suggested that multiple treatments of weed control may be needed.
Fun Facts
Horsetail is popularly used by florists in arrangements for its height and exotic appearance.
The stems are covered with abrasive fibers, which have made them useful for cleaning metal items such as cooking pots or drinking mugs.
If you are having issues with Horsetail, please contact the office at 651-456-9696 or weedmanmpls@gmail.com and we will assist you anyway we can.

What is Winterizing? How to get your lawn ready now to prepare for your spring lawn care! What are the benefits of Winterizing? Call Weed Man of the Twin Cities 651-456-9696

Winterizing:

Winterizing your lawn now is the key to prepare for your Spring Lawn Care!

The grass plants in a home lawn are living organisms that need to be properly cared for all year round. The harsh winter months in our climate are the hardest on the grass plant, and the Autumn is when the grass plant begins to prepare itself for winter, and next summer. Fall maintenance practices are important in building up the plant's tolerance to damaging temperature fluctuations, and disease organisms.
Fertilization
Autumn is the most crucial time to fertilize your lawn. It is during the cool days of fall that the grass plant slows its top growth and begins storing nutrients and sugars for the harsh months ahead. The storing process continues for as long as the plant is green. A fall fertilization is critical-this is the time when the plant is building reserves to maintain its health and thus determines the quality of next summer's lawn. Nitrogen and Potassium are essential parts of this process. Once the summer's rations are used up, the grass plant is ready for another feeding in the fall to increase root growth and fill them with food. These nutrients are also extremely beneficial in increasing the plant's resistance to damaging diseases, which will often attack when the plant is in a weakened state.
Aeration
The benefits of fall aeration to the grass plant cannot be stressed enough. This service reduces soil compaction, excessive thatch, and provides a top dressing for the lawn. By breaking up compaction and removing excess thatch, the infiltration of fertilizer nutrients, sunlight and air down into the soil is greatly improved. With this improved movement of needed elements, root growth is stimulated and extensive growth of stunted root systems occurs. By greatly improving root growth, the grass plant can reach and store more nutrients and water necessary to improve its health and stress tolerance, which will directly benefit the lawn's quality next summer.
Mowing
Just as mowing below the recommended height in the heat of summer will damage your lawn, so too will mowing too short in the cold weather of fall. When the cool weather of Autumn arrives, raise your mowing height to one half inch above the recommended height for the summer months. This will help stimulate stunted roots. For the final mowing of the year, lower your mowing height to one half inch below the standard summer mowing height. This will help the foliage prepare for winter and avoid damage from disease. As well, the clippings from the final mowing should be left on the lawn as mulch only if a mulching mower can be used. This will protect the delicate crowns of the grass plants, and provide valuable nutrients for the lawn.
Raking
It is important to remove all large piles of debris that cannot be mulched back into the lawn with your lawn mower. Lawn mower attachments are available that chop grass and leaves into tiny bits that provide a light top dressing which will supply nutrients to the soil as they breakdown. Large quantities of debris will not breakdown quickly, and so will damage the lawn by suffocating it, and by giving a moist home to damaging disease organisms. Please contact the office of you local Weed Man for more information.
