Dealing with Salt Damage on your lawn! Snow plow killed my grass?

Dealing  With Salt Damage:

 Salt Damage info at gardeningknowhow.com

Salts used on roads and sidewalks can cause moderate to severe damage to the turf and near plants. Salt damages the plants by drawing away moisture from the root system. This shocks the plant and causes browning and can kill the plants.

1:  To help your lawn recover, apply gypsum after the grass has dried out.

2:  Then give the area a thorough watering for at least 30 minutes. (Gypsum can also be used to reduce damage from pet urine.)

Fall lawn care tips... Raking, seeding, weeding, recycle leaves etc...

Fall is an important time in the lawn care business.

It is a great time to take care of perennial weeds such as creeping charlie, clover etc. September is wonderful for aeration and overseeding or putting in sod. Putting down a quality fertilizer for the winter can be a key to a successful spring.

A great article by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture really has a lot of good basics you may want to consider.

http://www.mda.state.mn.us/protecting/waterprotection/lawntips.aspx

Take time to peruse this list and take notes. It will be a big help in this season and the next.

How to get rid of your leaves this fall? Leaf recycling and composting!

Leaf Recycling Tips:

There are several options for disposing of fallen leaves. The best way is to compost them, because composting keeps leaves out of streets and storm sewers.

1: You can also use the leaves, whole or chipped, as winter mulch around bushes and plants.

2: Leave the leaves on the lawn and make several passes over them with a mower, chopping them into a thin     layer that is fine enough to stay on the lawn without causing damage but can still provide nourishment for the turf.

3: Also you can bag leaves for disposal from your local trash company or government agency.

Make sure your lawn is ready this winter. Please contact the office if you have questions.

Do you have a thinning lawn? Is your lawn bumpy and uneven? Is the ground hard like a rock? Then perhaps an aeration is in order! Call Weed Man in the Minneapolis, St.Paul areas today!

Aeration is one of the best things that you can do to improve your lawns quality.

11.    Reduces soil compaction, which improves on root development.
22.    It increases microbial activity that breaks down the thatch layer naturally.
33.    If done continuously over the years, it will help to even out the lawn. Reducing bumps and dips throughout  the lawn.
44.    It reduces water consumption by allowing water to go directly into the soil as opposed to running off or  pooling in areas.
55.   It helps to improve the turf thickness which in-turn will naturally reduce the weeds.

We also provide Aeration with Over-seeding. That application helps to rejuvenate the lawn since all plants have a life cycle. Introducing new plants into the system will keep your lawn young, heathy, and resilient to whatever the season has to offer. We use a pure 50/50 blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass. The Bluegrass is a sun grass and the Ryegrass is for the shaded areas. We use 4-5 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. If there are completely bare areas, they may need additional seed since it is not designed to completely fill in bare areas.

Controlling Moles in Minnesota! More on Moles, trapping Moles is the best method.

Minneapolis, MN Moles are certainly unwelcome and destructive pests to the lawn you have worked so hard to beautify. If left unchecked, moles can cause serious damage to your lawn’s root system and invite fellow animals to join the party going on underground.
Moles are insectivores (i.e. eat insects). While their eating habits can control some insect outbreaks on your property, their presence is not worth the trade-off. These burrowing animals dig extensive tunnels and create soil mounds in your Minneapolis, MN lawn that can be unsightly, hard to maneuver a lawn mower around, and, as mentioned earlier, can destroy your lawn’s root system and weaken its ability to stave off disease and insect damage.
Identification
Minneapolis, MN Moles are about the size of chipmunks, anywhere from 6 to 8 inches long, black to dark gray in color, and weigh 3 to 6 ounces. They feast primarily on earthworms and grubs, causing many homeowners to confuse the presence of grubs in the lawn as a sign of mole activity, but this is not always the case. Moles move quickly from one area of a lawn to another, establishing their tunnels and searching for insects.
Quick Minneapolis, MN Mole Facts
  • Moles are prolific tunnel builders and can exert a lateral digging force 32 times their actual body weight.
  • A 5-ounce mole will consume 45 to 50 lbs. of worms and insects each year.
  • Moles can dig surface tunnels at approximately 18 feet per hour.
  • Moles travel through existing tunnels at about 80 feet per minute.
Prevention & Control
They key to mole prevention is creating an unwelcome environment for them underground. Because these pesky animals thrive in soft, moist soil, it is important that you do not over water your lawn. Regular grub control will also help limit one of their favorite food sources.
Controlling existing Minneapolis, MN mole populations is more of a challenge. There are mole repellent products on the market that can be used to temporarily stem the tide, but the most effective control practice for moles is trapping. Trapping by far is the most effective way to control the mole population in an area. Some times partnering with neighbors on a unilateral approach can increase success.
Preventative Grub Treatment is a tool that can limit the food supply and sometimes moles will simply move on, plus this also mitigates grub damage to your lawn.  That said moles can come back at anytime and can tunnel through your yard to get the grubs at the neighbors. This brings us back to trapping as the best sure way to eliminate moles in your area.

Do I have moles? Why does my lawn have large holes or tunnels?

Moles; the tunneling creatures from below.

MOLES:
Holes and trails that run throughout your lawn along hedges, sidewalks, and walls may be caused by rodents called moles. Moles are 6” – 8” (15-20 cm) in length with a thin tail. The mole's eyes are concealed by hair. They have pink feet that are able to dig rapidly with broad (fingernail-type) claws.

DAMAGE:
During late spring and autumn, moles build an extensive network of both deep and surface tunnels. The tunnels act as the mole's living quarters. Deep tunnels may be from 6 to 24” below the surface. The mole, creating molehills, may push up these tunnels. Shallow tunnels are often long winding pathways throughout the surface of the lawn. These pathways are used during damp weather when much of the mole's food is near the surface. Moles are active all year round and can tunnel underground at a rate of 12-15 feet per hour with surface tunnels being built at 1 foot per minute.

BIOLOGY:

Mole populations usually remain stable throughout the season. Moles produce their offspring in the spring averaging three to four in a litter. The young remain with their mother for one month, and then begin tunneling. The young grow to adult size in four to eight weeks. Moles lead an extremely active life, eating their weight in food daily. They feed on insects, grubs and slugs found during tunneling, but their main source of food is the earthworm.

What is Leaf Blight? Why is my grass turning brown starting from the top?

LEAF BLIGHT – Ascochyta spp.

Leaf Blight occurs on lawns during hot humid weather. The disease enters the grass plants after evening mowing, followed by excessive night watering. In heavily infested patches the fungus damages the lawn in circular or tubular patches that often form large bleached areas. Close inspection of the plant reveals individual leaves dying from the tip down with a brownish purple line running horizontally across the plant. Control of these common lawn diseases The best method of control is for the homeowner to alter the present lawncare practices. Avoid allowing water to sit on the grass overnight. Avoid mowing in the evening. Prune trees to encourage more air movement. Also keeping the thatch layer to less than ½” (1 cm) and proper fertility should be done to prevent the occurrence of these diseases. Promoting a healthy lawn is the key. Got Voles? How To Get Rid Of Voles? What are Voles?

VOLES IMPORTANCE Voles, also known as field mice, are small brown rodents very common in yards and fields. Their presence is most often observed in the late winter and early spring right after the snow melts, when their grassy trails are laid bare and areas of dead grass appear. Voles do the most harm to small trees and shrubs when they chew on the bark, often hidden below winter snows. IDENTIFICATION Voles are a group of small, brownish rodents about the size and shape of a mouse. They have small ears and a short tail, which give them a “stocky” appearance. They spend a great deal of time eating grasses and roots and making trails. These surface runways are one of the easiest ways to identify voles. Usually seen in early spring just after snowmelt, a series of criss-crossing trails can be viewed on the surface. There may be larger patches of dried grass that function as storage areas for extra food and nesting materials. Voles will also make small holes about 1 inch across and underground tunnels to get to tubers and bulbs. They will even use mole tunnels. This often cause moles to be blamed for eating roots, instead of the white-grubs they actually eat. PREVENTION Voles are extremely common and total prevention is probably impossible but general yard sanitation may help keep vole numbers down. Remove woodpiles and other debris from the ground that may allow hiding places for voles. Keep grass trimmed short and bushes trimmed up from the ground. Bird feeders are another attraction for voles and should either be removed or the ground kept very clean to keep vole numbers down. MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES While lawn damage is most visible in the spring it is rarely permanent. Simply rake up the dead grass and reseed the area. As the surrounding grass grows it will cover up the trails.
